Are you defined by the actions you do? The things you say? or are you defined by how others perceive you? These are the questions that form the centerpiece of Jean-Paul Sartre's timeless work, No Exit. Three sickeningly incompatible people Garcin, Inez and Estelle and brought to the afterlife after their deaths and are locked within a mundane room with nothing but each other's company and some medieval furniture. As the play progresses and the three converse with each other they realize the purpose of their coming together, they were each other's torturers. The coward Garcin wants to find mental validation from Estelle, who is only interested in Garcin's body. Inez, being attracted to Estelle can't validate Garcin either, but can't get Estelle. As we delve into their pasts and how their interactions evolve from that of a formality to chaos and mayhem, it drives home the message that hell is not a place of torture chambers, fire pits or steel bulls; Hell is other people.

Memories of the Play :

This play was supposed to be the show stopper, given that it was the first full fledged semester production right after the pandemic. But what is worse is her husband plans to "dispose" of her. Amy hatches a plan. It's kill or be killed. In this two hander it's all a question of who is the hunter, and who is the hunted. It’s a study into the effects a parent has on their children and how deeply it shapes the child right into adulthood and beyond. Rajender, a loving husband but an unsuccessful father calls his children on to make a terrible decision that would shake the foundations of the family, ie, to save their ailing mother. The play delves into the morality of euthanasia; is saving their mother, really better for her? Through the character of Meera, Yash emphasizes the effects of parental abandonment, as she was ostracized by their mother when she came out as being lesbian. It’s a study into the consequences of unaddressed issues and maternal neglect, via the character of Vir, the gambling addict who threw his life away when his moral support of his mother became ill and sister let him. Through the character of Papa (Rajender), Yash showcases the complexities attributed to being a father and a husband at the same time.

The setting is so mundane and relatable, that almost everyone can relate with the emotions felt by the characters on stage. The conclusion the characters come to an end, though scary and ghastly, is a conclusion that most children in the same circumstances would come to at least in their head. The play shows the reality of the situation and doesn’t hold anything back. Complexity in the mundane would describe the overall gist of the play.

Memories of the Play :

Our first production right after the lockdown was lifted. Nearly a two year hiatus! Members who were first yearites in before the lockdown were suddenly third yearites and they took up the challenge to direct a play. Second yearites having barely done half a semester worth of sessions were thrust on the stage. The It was an exciting but thoroughly straining experience for us. The cast members were also seeing the stage for the first time. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">The Play

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">Siyaah Haashiye is an amalgamation of two stories written by Manto.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">The first story- Toba Tek Singh shows the eponymous character- Bishen Singh, as a former family man leading a sombre life in an asylum. His life is an apparent vegetative state, partially enlivened at any mention of or encounter with his family. According to the guards who offer a narrative about him, he has been standing for 15 years, in a reclused state.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">The story further proceeds depicted the lives of the various lunatics in the asylum, tormented by the partition and its very notion. No one really understood the entire concept, and in that epoch of chaos many lost the very whereabouts of their homes.

Bishen Singh personifies the idea of partition tearing apart worlds, toppling lives, distancing families, throwing everyone in a state of total disarray.

The second story: Khol Do depicts grotesque depths to which the partition altered human character. The play opens with an old Sirajuddin lying in a sea of corpses, gathering consciousness, only to the memory of his wife being butchered when they fled to what was now Pakistan. Sirajuddin's frantic attempts to search for his daughter are all in vain. Days later he meets a gang that is already carrying out rescue operations to get as many muslims to Pakistan as possible. Sirajuddin intricately describes his daughter's beautiful appearance, and that gang members promise to find her. But, every day brings nothing but bleaker hope for Sirajuddin as the gang members claim to fail in their daily attempts. Regardless he prays for the men who have volunteered to help him. One day, an apparent corpse is brought into the hospital and Siraj identifies her as his daughter. The doctor whilst examining her asks for the window to be opened, saying "Khol Do". Hearing this, Sakeena responds and gasps for breath, quickly undoes her salwar.

At first, Sirajuddin is elated that his daughter isn't dead and shouts with glee- "My daughter is alive, my daughter is alive." Soon he realizes that she has been so accustomed to rape by the very gang, that was sent to rescue her in the first place, that the very mention of the words "Khol Do" now trigger her to allow the rape without resisting.

Sirajuddin falls on his knees, questioning himself: "Is my daughter really alive?"

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">Memories of the play:
<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">One of the main challenges was that the none of the first years at the time had acted even once, owing to the unfortunate halt imposed on the club's activities by the authorities. This made clear to the diros that exposure to being a cast member was of the essence. Hence, the play was written carefully keeping in mind that everyone gets a fair learning curve.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">With around 20 cast members the blocking sessions were a challenge in their own.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">The play had to be staged in around 20-25 days owing to some restrictions making daily sessions of 6-7 hours absolutely mandatory.

The psenti-semites actively helped in direction, realizing the constraints of diros blocking a cast of 20.

The elaborate production was smoothly completed by Alanckrit who was the production manager for the third time.

The play was opened to an overwhelming response with an audience of over 600 people turning up on a Thursday evening, and appreciating the performance throughout. The positive comments and appreciations continued to flow in the subsequent weeks, with many professors commenting about how they loved the play and missed the club's performance in the last semester.

With an astounding response to the play, it was safe to say that the club was back with a bang.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">This play is a satirical comedy on the Indian bureaucratic system. It delves deep into the corrupted root causes of why & how development gets delayed. Instead of making the audience feel depressed about the harsh realities, by giving insights on the inside scene that happens in the offices, Ajay Shukla deftly tries to convey the same as a hilarious comedy which is bound to leave the audience with a thought.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The plot revolves around a modern-day Shah Jahaan and what all hindrances he'd have to face just to get the tender for Taj Mahal's construction get passed. He beckons Guptaji, an experienced civil engineer, to commence the construction of this memorial. Unaware of Guptaji's innate, inherent corrupt nature which is depicted with subdued subtlety as a result of the entire corrupt system affecting him, Shah Jahaan gives Guptaji the contract.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The hindrances that follow become hilariously annoying with various politicians protesting to Guptaji occupying the land of villagers, some revolting to the cutting down of trees, some officials halting the passing of the tender for an absurd pollution check, but all having one ulterior motive of making money out of this.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">During this entire process, the construction gets delayed by decades altogether, and the timeline of the central characters is shown across this time gap, surrounded by these humorous hindrances.

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">One of the main challenges for the diros was the depiction of the central characters and their evolution and changes throughout the entire timeline. For the same, after every scene, a dedicated production team was involved in make up involving hair coloring, facial lines, changing of props, being as smooth and quick as possible, as there was hardly any time between the scenes.

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">A lot of experimentation was done with Shah Jahaan's character, making a lot of changes and finally settling for a modern-day, neo Shah Jahaan, rather than the classic image of a Mughal ruler people have in mind, to give a fresh, tacky tinge to the play.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">For decades, from pre-independence to post-independence era,
volumes have been spoken about the plight of farmers: the backbone of Indian
economy, their tales of ill-treatment and ignorance towards the fundamentality
of their contribution. Unfortunate incidents in the so called “modern
contemporary India” reminding us of horrid atrocities against farmers under the
British Raj, fuelled the writing for this play.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">With the directors & assistant director researching
about various incidents across the nation, formulating notions and taking ideas
from the plays performed in Bumboo(intra-club street play competition) wrote a
gem of a script. Series of events throughout the play depicted different life
stories of individuals, especially farmers, drowning in unfair debt, being
tormented for more outputs for meagre reimbursements, tricked into giving up
their land, and all of these possessing stark resemblance with the atrocious
conditions and impositions the farmers had to survive during the British rule.
Bin Mandir Ka Bhagwaan questioned about the idea of true and actual freedom.
When freedom itself had failed to reach a specific, major chunk of the
population, even after 6-7 decades of independence, were we really free?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Starting with a self-written poem, interspersed with songs,
rhymes and melodies to interact with the audience in an aesthetic and
expressive way, the play majorly consisted of high intensity scenes, depicting
stories of a mother killing her own child to save her from a future imminent
death from starvation, unfurling the horrific irony of the food-producers of
the nation dying from the lack of the same. The other stories consisted of a
farmer being burdened with the impositions of an unfair pending debt in the
name of his deceased father, trapped by the nexus of money-lenders, zamindars
and politicians trying to capitalize on the farmer’s forced suicide. With other
heart-wrenching tales and exact facts guiding the play throughout, Bin Mandir
Ka Bhagwaan instilled sympathy for the farmers, made the spectators aware about
their adverse situation, and made them doubt whether freedom reached every
Indian or not.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">On the chilly night of 9th February 2016, a horde
of teary eyed spectators, a more aware audience ignited to catalyse changes,
left the FD-2 QT, leaving behind a group of red-kurta clad actors marinating in
the success of dissipation of ideas and emotions that they could be a part of.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">The idea of the play, stemmed from Shivank’s
father suggesting him to write about the plight of Indian farmers, to not focus
on how frequently it has been talked about, but to focus on how and why the
condition has still not improved.

·<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: -18pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">Pradyumn, in his tenure as AssD, spent around a

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">Many a times, during the blockings, the songs
wouldn’t come out in perfect coordination. To ensure that this doesn’t happen
again, the directors made everyone walk (and sometimes even sing
simultaneously) at the same pace, which they varied from 1-10(slowest to
fastest); everyone had to walk at the pace, the number of which was instructed
by the diros.

·<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: -18pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">According to the diros, this street play was
different from the other street plays they had been a part of as it was much
more serious as compared to the humorously interactive plays they had done
before. This play spoke about a gravely serious issue and demanded the emotional
intensity to be maintained and connected with the audience on a different
frequency altogether.

·<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: -18pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">The diros had their set of favourite scenes: one
being when the mother(Aishwarya) is forced to strangulate her own child, and
the other being when a destitute farmer (Alanckrit) is beaten up by a
moneylender. These scenes made the audience well up, some of them later
contacting the actors as to tell them how impactful the scenes were and how
much connected they felt with it, essaying comments like: " Why did you
beat him up?”, “I cried in the scene when the child was being put down”.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Das Maathe Sau Naam, a masterpiece of words, penned by
Aishwarya Sharma and Pradyumn Awasthi, managed to convince its audience that a
flip-side to the classic mythological tale of Ramayana did exist. No character
deserves to be judged based on a story narrated from a biased single-sided
perspective. Yet, since times unknown we have blindly believed in Ramayana
being Ram’s eulogy and a tale that decimates Ravana’s character, regarding him
as the epitome of evil.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">On the first day of Oasis ’16 under the scorching sun:
passion, enthusiasm, conviction and belief resonated in every actor’s voice in
the FD-2 QT. Every actor who entered the street play circle, surrounded by
hundreds of spectators about to witness a paradigm shift in their ideologies
about good and evil, had one motive in mind, to convince every soul witnessing
this play that stories aren’t just black and white, they do have greys and more
often than not they are like yin-yang. The script had to be cautiously written,
keeping in mind while presenting a conviction of the good in Ravana’s evil, any
fact should not be sabotaged or tampered with; or the play should not turn out
to be a forced eulogy of Ravana instead.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The play consisted of scenes from the Ramayana, shown from
Ravana’s perspective: how his concern for his sister after being assaulted was
justified, how Sita was swayed from her morals without using any force, of how
her sanctity was kept intact even when in Ravana’s kingdom.

second place in Oasis after 7 long years would still be trivialized by the

spectator was successfully convinced of the side of the story the play was

efforts in maintaining a similar character that was consistent throughout
regardless of the actors’ prominent individual traits.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">A major issue to be tackled during the blocking was that entire script was poetic, and to actually demarcate between the songs and dialogues was a task.

watching plays, videos and readings off the internet based on the same or

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; text-indent: -18pt;">In this demanding duration of developing this
play, 4 senior members of the club whilst in Delhi (to watch a play for more
ideas), to relieve themselves of the bottled up frustration that was taking a
toll on them, had to go to spend a day in “Machaan”, which they would remember
forever as a day of unquantifiable disclosures and memories.

Pradyumn(2014 batch) stayed for a month in Aakash Juneja’s (2013 batch) room,
to catalyse the development of the play with a senior’s inputs. In Juneja’s
words, “ajeeb tha, 3-1 mein main Diro, aur 4-1 mein Assistant Director?!”

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Miss Leela Benare, the chirpy & lively protagonist, kick starts the play with her quick humor and purposeful flirtatious jibes at the guileless Samant, with a hidden yet harmless ulterior motive. Samant, is the helper who is in charge to show the venue of the play to the theater company, of which Benare & other arriving members are a part of.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mr. Kashikar, the owner of the theater company and the most influential character on stage approves the suggestion of making Samant a part of the play, tending to the absence of a few regular actors of their company. In order to facilitate the process of helping the theatrically inexperienced Samant learn the basics of acting for their show scheduled that night,<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">they present to him a trial-run of a play, a mock play. The play is not scripted beforehand but is an on-screen adaptation and the story builds on as various actors lend different dimensions to the plot. With a basic premise set-up of Benare being accused of child-abortion, the play builds up to discussing the reasons behind the abortion, vilifying and objectifying the character of the female lead.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mr. Kashikar assumes the role of the Judge, and Sukhatme a lawyer in real life, confidently assumes the roles of both the prosecutor and the defense lawyer, owing to the dearth of actors. As the remnant actors- Mrs. Kashikar, Ponkshe, Karnik & Rokde, playing witnesses, come up and narrate real-life incidents that act as build-ups to the story and present a convincing conviction of Benare, lines begin to blur between fiction and reality. In the mock play, Benare was accused of engaging in pre-marital activities of sexual nature and of trying to attempt suicide after no one responded to her pleas. Wherein, in real life t<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">oo, Benare had encountered the same issues.

Benare, helplessly watching her personal traumas unfolding during the mock play in front of everyone, suffers intense mental agony as it confronted her with reality. In the end, Benare, or more accura<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">tely her inner voice, questions the society and tries to protect her sanctity. Tired of being questioned for her character, Benare ultimately breaks down and succumbs to what society and life have imposed on her.

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">For the first time in a while, the directors used the "committed memory" technique- where the actors instead of memorizing the dialogues before hand, were blocked while delivering dialogues from their script, gradually getting the essence of the lines from verbal and action cues.

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Before the actual blocking of the play began, the directors sat with the entire cast and clarified the doubts regarding any event in the script, reading the same again, line by line.

The Play :

It is a play based in the dark ages of French Revolution when the very existence of human free will was under the strict vigilance of the Nazis. The resistance movement engrossed men and women from all regions of France, especially the juvenile learned blood. The root reason for this was the disregard of the very quintessence of human values and dignity. Shorn of its identity, these people searched for a meaning for their life and its very subsistence. The story is about five prisoners of war who await their turn to be tested against the Nazis one by one. Inspite of its background, the play is entirely just about one thing - "human emotion under trying circumstances". Its about how these prisoners discover a new self of themselves so close to death.

Some memories from the play:

A lot of initial practices for the play were done outside the library, lecture theatre complex and Sky lawns due to "unavoidable circumstances" where the institution cancelled our bookings

Auri had to be slapped on his right cheek by the guards. There were dedicated sessions and Auri was regularly beaten up to ensure the slap comes with the right pace!

The complete play was once rehearsed in a dark room with all the actors locked up in the balcony. This was an amazing experience!

The French and Germans had separate "bonding sessions" so that they could understand each other better. The results were varied.

When the play was being staged, the lights and sounds added beautifully to the intense scenes- specially the one where Fransua was killed.
