THE PLAY:
Adheen is a story that explores the complexities of family relationships. It’s a study into the effects a parent has on their children and how deeply it shapes the child right into adulthood and beyond. Rajender, a loving husband but an unsuccessful father calls his children on to make a terrible decision that would shake the foundations of the family, ie, to save their ailing mother. The play delves into the morality of euthanasia; is saving their mother, really better for her? Through the character of Meera, Yash emphasizes the effects of parental abandonment, as she was ostracized by their mother when she came out as being lesbian. It’s a study into the consequences of unaddressed issues and maternal neglect, via the character of Vir, the gambling addict who threw his life away when his moral support of his mother became ill and sister let him. Through the character of Papa (Rajender), Yash showcases the complexities attributed to being a father and a husband at the same time.
The setting is so mundane and relatable, that almost everyone can relate with the emotions felt by the characters on stage. The conclusion the characters come to an end, though scary and ghastly, is a conclusion that most children in the same circumstances would come to at least in their head. The play shows the reality of the situation and doesn’t hold anything back. Complexity in the mundane would describe the overall gist of the play.
Memories of the Play :
- Our first production right after the lockdown was lifted. Nearly a two year hiatus! Members who were first yearites in before the lockdown were suddenly third yearites and they took up the challenge to direct a play. Second yearites having barely done half a semester worth of sessions were thrust on the stage. The It was an exciting but thoroughly straining experience for us. The cast members were also seeing the stage for the first time. We managed to pull it through and we successfully performed three plays in the span of two days.
- It was refreshing to see the club booking three rooms and in all three rooms something or the other was always afoot.
- It was a major learning experience for everyone evolved because none of the members were given roles that they have any experience in before.
- At the end of the Trifecta, we can say that the club is finally back on track and with the success of the events, we are all the more enthusiastic for the upcoming semesters. New endeavors and new challenges. Stay Tuned!
